50 – 60% of business waste cannot be recycled. It is your duty as a business to dispose of that waste safely and responsibly: we can help.
Nearly all commercial waste in the UK gets deposited into landfill sites where it never fully degrades and contributes to the generation of methane gas, an extremely powerful pollutant. Or it’s sent abroad.
We do not send waste to landfill. Instead Westminster uses general waste to generate power at the SELCHP energy recovery facility in SE14. This generates enough electricity for 50,000 London homes as well as District Heating which tackles fuel poverty for vulnerable residents. The energy contained in 1 bag of waste is enough to run seven hot showers.
Once the waste is combusted for energy generation, any remaining material (called ‘bottom ash’) is recycled as an aggregate in road building – recycled bottom ash was used in the construction of the London 2012 Olympic Park. Any metals in the ash are separated and sent for recycling.
If you’d like to see for yourself how this works we are happy to arrange for a tour of the facilities Westminster uses to dispose of your waste.
If you have off-street storage space we strongly recommend you use one of our waste bins. They are by far the best way to have your waste collected. They come in big and small sizes depending on how much rubbish you produce. Just contact us to set up a collection agreement.
If you can’t store a waste bin within your premises then please use the red bags for general waste. They are sold on a pre-paid basis so you only have to pay for what you actually use. The price of a red bag pays to have it collected by the truck and for it to be treated at SELCHP, safely and to high standards which won’t harm the environment. No contract is required. Simply order the bags online or by phone, fill them with rubbish and leave them out for collection at the scheduled time.
