Festive season recycling and waste management
Some businesses close for the holidays, but we, like many of our customers operate year-round. The City Council will maintain normal recycling and waste services, even on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Contact us for any special collection needs.
Christmas trees
Disposing of Christmas trees doesn’t need to be expensive. You can drop off trees for free at one of our Christmas tree collection sites located across the borough. Remember to remove all decorations and we'll take care of the rest. If the tree is under 2 meters or if it's made of plastic, you can present it for your regular waste collection with one of the yellow (‘cardboard’) stickers attached which can be ordered online.
If your tree reaches over 2 meters then it will need to be collected via a bulky waste collection. We provide these Christmas tree collections at a discounted rate during the festive period.
Extra waste or recycling collections
Do you need extra collections because you have higher waste volumes? We're happy to arrange extra collections, even at short notice. If you need to arrange any additional recycling and waste collections during the December period then please contact us via the usual phone number: 020 7641 6180.
Order more bags
Do you have more waste and recycling than usual in December? If you're in need of more waste or recycling bags, the easiest way to order commercial waste bags is online.

How to handle food waste over the festive season
Managing food waste during the festive season is easier than ever with Westminster City Council. Whether you're managing a hospitality business year-round, or you're catering for festive events, the Christmas period usually generates more food waste.
What goes where?
It's easy to keep waste to a minimum by a) reducing waste and b) recycling more of it.
Make sure to put paper, glass, recyclable plastic, cans, Tetra paks and cardboard into the recycling bin. General waste includes food-soiled items, serviettes, tissues, plastic bags and polystyrene. Finally, make sure any food waste from business or catering-related events goes into the food waste bin.
Please remember that the following items cannot go in your mixed recycling and must be disposed of in the general rubbish. Remember to reuse items wherever possible:
- Glitter and foil wrapping paper
- Glittery Christmas cards
- Wreaths
- Non-paper gift wrapping and gift bags
- Tinsel
- Baubles
- Polystyrene
- Bubble wrap
- Plastic bags and film
- Christmas crackers
- Ribbons and bows
- Food wrappers and packets
