After experiencing issues with their private commercial waste collector, the Institute for Government reached out to Westminster City Council’s Commercial Waste Services for assistance. We helped them with a revised collection set-up, allowing for a more reliable, transparent and sustainable approach to waste and recycling.
Improving services for waste and recycling
The first step involved determining the full extent of the Institute for Government’s requirements and establishing where things could be improved. After conducting an in-depth waste audit, we put together an improvement plan for the collection of general waste and recycling from the institute’s Carlton Garden headquarters.
We also advised the Institute for Government on how they could save money by reducing the amount of waste created each day.
After assessing their daily waste and recycling collection needs, we were able to provide solutions to overcome the specific obstacles that the Institute for Government were faced with.
One of the first changes we implemented was to increase the number of recycling bins in the institute to match the number of general waste bins. By providing additional capacity for recycling, the institute will be able to reach their environmental and sustainability goals by ensuring that less waste will end up as landfill.
To reflect this change in the number of recycling bins, collections for general and recycling waste now occur at the same frequency. Commercial Waste Services are also available to the Institute for Government for any ad hoc waste collections that may be needed.

What were the results?
Our partnership with the Institute for Government has been a significant success. Not only were we able to provide 100% reliability of service, with zero issues, we also did so with complete transparency, so the institute knew precisely what to expect during every step of the process.
Along with offering a very competitive rate for these premium services, we were able to improve sustainability efforts throughout the organisation. By providing more recycling bins and offering additional advice on best practices, the institute experienced a 37.5% increase in their recycling rate.
Finally, we were able to produce the best rate in the country for missed collections, with just 3.9 received per 100,000 customers.
What are the next steps?
Our work didn’t just end when these changes were made. We remain committed to helping the Institute for Government to further improve their waste management practices and ensure all legal and environmental obligations are met whenever new regulations are put in place. For example, we will be there to assist and advise on how to best meet the commitment of Westminster City Council to eventually send zero waste to landfill sites and to process all future recycling through local facilities only.
We will also be on hand to provide even more recycling bins if and when the needs arise. This is a level of service we offer to all of our clients, as we pride ourselves on anticipating local and national changes, as well as supplying simple and reliable solutions to any changing waste management requirements.
Managing waste with Westminster City Council
There are several benefits we provide that go above and beyond what many private service contractors can offer.
First of all, as a local authority, we ensure that we meet the full requirements of the environmental regulators and their in-depth audits.
We are also completely transparent about what we do. We will always produce the requisite documentation and risk assessments to reassure our clients and to confirm they are placing their trust in the right hands.
Lastly, we are committed to processing and disposing of all collected waste in a socially responsible and environmentally friendly way. By using local facilities and a fleet of electric vehicles, we ensure that less harmful emissions are generated. We also guarantee that none of the general waste we collect ever becomes landfill.
