On the 5th of June 2017, we will be recognising World Environment Day – an annual opportunity to focus on how individuals, businesses and organisations can impact the environment more positively. This year the event is being led and hosted by Canada; with a theme of ‘Connecting People to Nature’.
The history behind World Environment Day
The global event started back in 1972 and activities ranged from cleaning up neighbourhoods to replanting trees. Since then World Environment Day has grown bigger and bigger each year and activities now include fighting against wildlife crime and instead of replanting 1 or 2 trees, whole forests are being replanted!
Westminster City Council Commercial Waste Services and the environment
At Westminster’s Commercial Waste Services, we take a strong environmental stance. All of the waste we collect is reused. We use your general waste to power and heat homes, your food waste for fertiliser, your mixed recycling to turn into remanufactured materials and much more. Take a look at our ‘What happens to our Waste’ infographic to see exactly what happens to your waste. We offer a completely closed loop system; with no wastage.
This means that on a daily basis we are contributing to a more sustainable environment.
What can you do to support World Environment Day?
People from around the world take different measures on World Environment Day, but all contributions are appreciated.
Here are a few suggestions on what you can do:
- Attend an event, to celebrate the day with others
- Register your own event, to bring people in your workplace together. Organise a clean-up day as an example.
- Record the biodiversity of any garden or communal area, to help scientists understand the changes in nature
- Share a picture of you in your favourite place using #WorldEnvironmentDay
Or if you don’t want to wait until the 5th of June to get started and are based in the Westminster area, you can get started by using our recycling and waste services. With our commercial waste bags and bins you can be sure that your waste is being disposed of in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.
Then you can celebrate World Environment Day every day!
