Keys and padlocks

Keys and padlocks should not be placed in your recycling bin/bag.

The machines used to sort mixed recycling can’t extract them properly. Please dispose of them as general waste. General waste is sent for energy from waste incineration . Any remaining metals, like keys, are extracted for recycling from the ash.
