As we move into 2026, it's now been two years since the UK has implemented its ban on single-use plastics. While businesses should already have adapted to these regulations, we understand that some may still be navigating this transition. Whether you're just getting started or looking to refine your approach, we're here to help you understand and comply with the regulations.

The ban

The UK government started its ban on single-use plastics in October 2023. From this time, additional single-use plastic items will be prohibited from supply in England, affecting businesses across the hospitality, retail, and food service sectors.

The ban covers plastic plates, bowls, trays, cutlery, balloon sticks, and polystyrene cups and food containers. If your business currently supplies, sells, or uses these items, we can help you take action on these regulation changes.

If you haven’t started yet, then we can help.

The transition away from single-use plastics requires careful planning and preparation. You'll need to:

  • Audit your current stock to identify which items you use
  • Source suitable alternatives
  • Update your suppliers to ensure they are following these regulation changes
  • Train your staff on the new procedures and materials
Sustainable alternatives that work

The good news is that there are now excellent alternatives available for every banned item. For dine-in services, reusable options like ceramic, glass, or metal provide a premium experience that customers appreciate. For takeaway services, paper and cardboard alternatives have improved significantly in recent years, with FSC-certified sustainable packaging now widely available. Some innovative businesses are even exploring edible cutlery and containers, which create a unique selling point while eliminating waste entirely.
