Running a restaurant or catering business in Westminster means maintaining high standards of kitchen safety and waste management. One often-overlooked aspect is the disposal of commercial kitchen knives. Whether you're replacing worn blades or disposing of damaged equipment, in this blog we are going to cover why it's essential and how to handle knife disposal correctly to protect your staff, our crews, and the environment
Improper disposal of knives poses serious risks to our teams who could suffer injuries from exposed blades. Beyond the immediate safety concerns, businesses face legal compliance issues under Health and Safety regulations such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Legal requirements
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Environmental Protection Act 1990, businesses have a duty of care to ensure waste is handled safely and prevent harm to waste handlers. This includes disposing of commercial waste through authorised channels and maintaining waste transfer documentation. These are key in ensuring the protection of all members of the waste management chain.
How to dispose of kitchen knives safely
The golden rule is to never place knives in general waste. Loose knives in general waste bags create dangerous situations for team members and collection crews, and hence require extra precautions.
In order to ensure safe disposal please contact your Westminster Commercial Waste Services account manager to set up a sharp objects collection. When preparing knives for disposal, wrap each blade in multiple layers of cardboard or thick newspaper and secure the wrapping with strong tape. Clearly label the package as "SHARP" or "CAUTION: KNIVES" to alert our collection crews/handlers. Once wrapped, please place the knives in a rigid, puncture-proof container such as a sharps bin or sturdy plastic container with a secure lid.
For bulk knife disposal or regular commercial kitchen equipment disposal, contact our team to arrange appropriate collection. We're here to make the process as straightforward as possible.
