Last night the Westminster City Council’s joint project with Sheffield City Council, Magtec and Veolia on electrifying the City Council’s collection fleet were formally recognised at the LAPV Future Fleet Awards 2020.The awards ceremony took place on 22nd January at the Guildhall in the City of London. Organised by Local Authority Plant and Vehicles, a leading trade publication, the Future Fleet Forum is a truly international event and in 2020 featured judges from the City of London, City of Edmonton, City of Calgary and City of New York. Commercial Waste Services is extremely proud of the recognition for having the most sustainable and environmentally friendly waste collection fleet in the country.
Tackling London’s air pollution problem
Congestion and vehicle emissions pollute London’s air and Westminster in particular suffers greatly from poor air quality caused by traffic congestion and air pollution from conventional diesel- and petrol-powered vehicles. Our current fleet already exceeds the requirements of the Ultra-Low Emissions Zone which was brought in by TfL to tackle London’s air pollution problem. Our eRCV project goes even further and works on electrifying the City Council’s waste collection fleet and replacing fossil fuel powered trucks with electric ones that run on electricity generated from our general waste. General waste is the waste left over which cannot or should not be recycled.
Future Fleet Awards 2020
The Future Fleet Awards provides recognition for the most innovative, strategic, safety, and sustainability initiatives in the UK fleet management sector. It highlights the critical challenges faced by our industry, including propulsion systems, staff attraction and retention, service delivery, procurement issues, compliance, safety and sustainability. Our eRCV project won in the category Most Innovative Fleet Management Strategy facing stiff competition from a number of other entries.
We are delighted that our efforts improving local air quality and providing genuinely sustainable waste and recycling collections was formally recognised.
