Westminster City Council wins prestigious Future Fleet Award 2020
Last night, Westminster City Council’s joint project with Sheffield City Council, Magtec and Veolia on electrifying the City Council’s collection fleet was formally recognised at the LAPV Future Fleet Awards 2020. The awards ceremony took place on 22nd January at the Guildhall in the City of London. Organised by Local Authority Plant and Vehicles, a leading trade publication, the Future Fleet Forum is an international event and in 2020 featured judges from the City of London, City of Edmonton, City of Calgary and City of New York. Commercial Waste Services is extremely proud of the recognition for having the most sustainable and environmentally friendly waste collection fleet in the country.
Tackling London’s air pollution problem
Congestion and vehicle emissions pollute London’s air. Westminster, in particular, suffers greatly from poor air quality caused by traffic congestion and air pollution from conventional diesel and petrol-powered vehicles. Our current fleet already exceeds the requirements of the Ultra-Low Emissions Zone which was brought in by TfL to tackle London’s air pollution problem. Our eRCV project goes even further and works on electrifying the City Council’s waste collection fleet, replacing fossil fuel-powered trucks with electric ones that run on electricity generated from our general waste. General waste is the waste left over which cannot or should not be recycled. These trucks will enable us to keep Westminster’s streets clean in a more sustainable and environmentally way. This trial is one of the first of its kind in the UK.
Future Fleet Awards 2020
The Future Fleet Awards provides recognition for the most innovative, strategic, safe and sustainable initiatives in the UK fleet management sector. It highlights the critical challenges faced by our industry, including propulsion systems, staff attraction and retention, service delivery, procurement issues, compliance, safety and sustainability. Our eRCV project won the category ‘Most Sustainable Fleet Management Department’, facing stiff competition from a number of other entries. We are delighted that our efforts in improving local air quality and providing genuinely sustainable waste and recycling collections was formally recognised.
The project team was presented the award by Barry Sheerman MP, who said
“The judges rated the partnership and collaboration approach of these organisations very highly. It showed that it is possible to become more sustainable while upcycling and saving costs.”
