Where does your hazardous waste go?
Many of Westminster's hazardous waste materials are processed at Veolia's Ellesmere Port facility, the UK's largest high-temperature incinerator (HTI). This state-of-the-art site specialises in the safe destruction of hazardous and high-security waste, ensuring complete elimination of dangerous materials.
Different waste types require different treatment methods. While some materials like asbestos must be sent to specialist landfill sites, others such as solvents can be treated and reused. However, the majority of hazardous waste is safely destroyed through high-temperature incineration, the most effective disposal method for protecting our environment and public health.
How does the process work?
Safety is paramount at every stage. Before any waste arrives at the kiln, rigorous testing takes place. Samples are taken directly from delivery vehicles and analysed using advanced chemical techniques and spectroscopy. This screening identifies any chemicals that could cause problems during combustion or prove difficult to remove from exhaust gases.
Once approved, chemists use the waste's calorific value to determine the safe feeding rate into the kiln. Most waste is shredded into a consistent paste before injection into the rotating kiln, which operates at approximately 1200°C. This high temperature, combined with slow rotation, ensures complete combustion and minimizes harmful carbon monoxide generation.
Environmental protection
The environmental safeguards at Ellesmere Port are comprehensive. Gases produced during combustion are extracted under negative pressure and undergo a rigorous "scrubbing" process. Alkaline filters remove acidic gases, while cooling and additional filtering separate out toxic components. Only water vapour is released into the atmosphere, with continuous monitoring ensuring no toxic compounds escape.
The non-hazardous bottom ash remaining after combustion is safely sent to landfill.
