Some of you are already aware that The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has introduced new legislation aimed at simplifying recycling. This new approach will come into effect for businesses on March 31st, and we're here to help you prepare.

DEFRA's new legislation introduces a standardised approach to recycling across England, including specific requirements for food waste. The goal is to make recycling simpler and more consistent, ultimately increasing recycling rates and reducing contamination.

Under the new rules, all businesses will be required to separate recyclables and food waste from other waste streams. Food waste will be collected separately from other recyclables and general waste, with collections occurring at least weekly to prevent odours and hygiene issues. Importantly, unlike previous regulations, there's no minimum threshold for food waste production - all businesses, regardless of size, must have a food waste collection in place. Offices still create food waste such as teabags and lunch leftovers, even one small caddy in your kitchen can make a difference.

To prepare for these changes, businesses should start by auditing their waste to understand how much food waste they produce and where it's generated. Contact us if you’re unsure about self auditing and one of our experts will visit your businesses and provide you with a  free waste audit. Setting up dedicated food waste bins in all relevant areas of your business is crucial, as is training your staff about the new requirements and the importance of proper food waste separation. It's also a good time to review your waste contract.
