In the face of COVID-19, at Commercial Waste Services (CWS), we have been committed to helping our customers during this challenging period. During this time we have not charged businesses that had to close due to strict lockdown restrictions, while some of our competitors charged closed businesses 50% or more of their annual account value.
How else have we been keeping charges low for our customers?
At CWS, we do not have to charge VAT and we provide flexible and competitive pricing. We are committed to offering the lowest prices in Westminster, giving you plenty of value for your money. Included in our low costs, we offer tailor-made services to ensure waste and recycling collections perfectly suit your business’ needs.
In fact, our prices are up to 20% cheaper than if you were to appoint a private waste collector. For instance, our mixed recycling bags cost just £0.72, while other competitors charge as much as £1.40 or more per bag. The price paid for our commercial waste bags covers having them collected by the truck and then sending them for environmentally-friendly treatment and recycling.
We guarantee that there are no hidden charges or additional costs in your pricing arrangement. As a local authority operation, we offer complete transparency around this. Our service operates on a not-for-profit basis as per our legal obligations under waste management legislation. Our aim is to keep your costs down, helping you reduce waste and only provide you with services you actually need for your business.
The benefits of choosing Commercial Waste Services
From growing our electric fleet and offering reliable 24/7 collections to our customers, to using environmentally-friendly local waste and recycling disposal facilities, there are a number of reasons why Commercial Waste Services is a trusted choice as your waste collector. Aside from keeping our charges low for customers, here are some more advantages to working with us.
A growing electric fleet
Our electric refuse collection vehicles (eRCV) were originally diesel trucks reaching their end-of-life. We are currently in the process of upcycling our collection vehicles and fitting them with electrical motors to reduce emissions. The remainder of our existing fleet is fitted with the innovative and award-winning Eminox exhaust filters, which even exceed Euro 6 emissions standards. In addition to our 26-tonne and 18-tonne eRCVs, we are in the process of converting our smaller street cleansing vehicles to electric propulsion as well.
With the largest waste collection fleet in London, we are continuously working to be leaders in our industry and find innovative, environmentally-friendly and sustainable ways to reduce traffic emissions and air pollution in Westminster. The goal is to make the entire 200-vehicle fleet electric by 2022 as part of our efforts to make Westminster carbon-neutral by 2040. In fact, our eRCV project won us ‘Most Sustainable Fleet Management Department’ at the 2020 LAPV Future Fleet Awards.
24/7 collections and reliable customer service
We offer strong and comprehensive customer service, with quick round-the-clock response times for any unexpected issues, additional collections or ad-hoc requests. We pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service and track data to ensure high service levels. The average answer time for customers calling is just a couple of seconds across thousands of incoming calls.
Our high level of reliability means that no matter the conditions (bad weather, bank holidays, heavy traffic, mitigating the impact of special events or demonstrations etc.), we will always be there to make your collections within your designated time slot. We offer collection arrangements suited to your needs so there is no disruption to your business operations.
Using local waste and recycling facilities
Everything we collect is sent to local high-performing disposal and recycling facilities. The waste is then turned into raw resources for manufacturing and creating new products or used to generate electricity and heat for up to 50,000 London homes each year. Some of this electricity even powers our growing electric collection fleet. None of the waste we collect is sent to landfill
The general (unrecyclable) waste we collect is sent to South East London Combined Heat and Power (SELCHP). This energy recovery facility uses state of the art technology to turn general waste into renewable energy in the form of electricity and district heating. A significant amount of the recycling we collect is sent to Veolia’s Materials Recovery Facility in Southwark, one of the most advanced in Europe, where all recycling is thoroughly sorted before it can be recycled into new products.

The City Council as Waste Collection Authority (WCA)
Westminster City Council is WCA, which makes Commercial Waste Service the legal default collection service in Westminster, collecting waste on every street. This means collections from private commercial waste management providers place an unnecessary burden on the environment since they duplicate journeys that already exist as part of our own collection system. This inefficient set-up is detrimental to the level of traffic congestion and air pollution in the city, harming the health of those working, living and visiting Westminster.
Increasing recycling rates with our clients
Working with businesses to increase recycling rates is at the heart of Commercial Waste Services. We encourage businesses to commit to responsible waste management and are dedicated to ensuring our customers’ waste management arrangements are as efficient and effective as possible. Rather than simply sell you extra waste or recycling services, we will help you design-out and reduce waste in the first place.
From conducting a full waste audit to helping educate staff on the benefits of segregating different waste streams, we helped Central Hall jump from a recycling rate of 11% to 68%.
Working with an enormously diverse range of industries
We work with a wide variety of businesses and organisations across multiple sectors and industries including retail, institutes, education, small businesses, hospitality, offices, food services, event organisers and more. From Claridges Hotel and Westminster Abbey to the Royal Automobile Club, see here to discover more of the many sectors we work with.
