Recycle more of the right things, more often, this Recycle Week — Recycle Now’s flagship annual event aimed at inspiring residents and businesses up and down the country to improve their recycling habits.
This year’s event runs from 16th to 22nd October and its theme is “The Big Recycling Hunt”, which focuses on those items that can be recycled but are commonly missed. What role can your local business play in this year’s event? Read on to learn more about Recycle Week, how to participate, and why you should help.
Recycle Week celebrates a special anniversary
In Recycle Now’s words, Recycle Week is “the one week of the year where retailers, brands, waste management companies, trade associations, governments and the media come together to achieve one goal: to galvanise the public into recycling more of the right things, more often.”
This year marks its 20th anniversary. To celebrate this special occasion, Recycle Week 2023 aims to inspire businesses, residents, and entire communities to get more involved in recycling.
The campaign is divided into two main elements. Firstly, there will be exciting activities for schools to engage in, encouraging children across the country to actively participate.
Secondly, there will be a strong focus on local authorities, partners, and brands to spread Recycling Week’s core message. It’s in this area that Westminster Commercial Waste Services is lending its support and we hope as many of our customers as possible will also take advantage of this opportunity to come together and drive positive recycling habits.
If sustainability is a key part of your business message — or even if it isn’t — join forces with Recycle Week this year and help make their anniversary celebration one to remember!

Of course, recycling shouldn’t stop with Recycling Week. The most effective recycling initiatives are the little changes to your recycling habits that you’re able to make every day.
- Creating less waste by consuming fewer materials will directly impact how much waste your company produces and how much needs to be recycled in the first place.
- Separating and recycling the correct items will help you comply with the legal requirement for all businesses to recycle, as set out in the Environment Act 2019, reducing both contamination of your recycling and your waste management costs.
- Educate your employees on responsible recycling habits. Raising awareness of sustainability across the business will help you to set expectations around your employees’ recycling habits while educating them on what effective recycling practices look like. - Recycling your business waste with Westminster’s Commercial Waste Services. For full confidence that your commercial waste collector handles your waste responsibly, we’re here to help. Our services are built on transparency and a commitment to the ethical disposal of all the waste we collect from businesses, so you can be sure your recycling is sent to the right place for proper treatment. Creating less waste to begin with, separating your recycling correctly, and working with local commercial waste services are all effective ways to drive repeatable, predictable, long-lasting recycling behaviour changes.

In 2022, Recycle Week ran a campaign to boldly challenge common misconceptions and recycling myths. As a result of its marketing campaign and all of the support it received from local authorities, retailers, and other brands, 14% of UK adults ( 7.1 million citizens) reported that they recalled seeing or hearing about Recycle Week. 47% of those (3.7 million citizens) said they did something differently as a result of seeing or hearing about Recycle Week.
Recycling needn’t be a chore. Recycling Week exists to demonstrate this as well as celebrating all positive recycling habits maintained across the nation. Any awareness you can raise for this important issue over the course of the week will help to raise Recycle Now’s voice, at a time when local communities everywhere can make a difference through something as small and simple as disposing of their waste responsibly.
