Hotel partners with Westminster City Council for continuous improvement in hospitality waste management

hotel waste management in maryleboneFor those readers involved in operating one of the many Westminster’s hotels or event venues, we’d like to draw your attention to our latest case study featuring The Langham Hotel. In this case study, we take a look at some of the drivers behind the sustainability of hotel waste management in Marylebone, through working with Westminster City Council in this important business sector.

Introducing The Langham Hotel

The Langham Hotel is synonymous with 5-star luxury. With 400 rooms serving both leisure and blue-chip business clients, this Victorian hotel, operating since 1865, is just off busy Oxford Street. Guests in the hotel can be residents or can be attending one of the many meetings and conferences hosted all year around.

Where do waste and recycling fit?

Waste management to The Langham Hotel is not simply a cost overhead. The Global Hotel Group, of which The Langham is a key venue, has a strong Corporate & Social Responsibility (CSR) programme – “Connect” – that was established in response to the increasing demands of clients. Awards have followed including Gold-Certified EarthCheck and Green Tourism certifications.

Challenges faced

The full case study contains a list of all the challenges that The Langham Hotel identified when conducting a complete review of waste management in a luxury hotel environment. They included issues such as a minimal impact on guests, how to communicate with a large workforce and the handling and storage of waste and recycling before collection.

Services to match

The Commercial Waste Services team at Westminster City Council have worked with The Langham Hotel to take the hotel from a ’general waste only’ service set up with their previous waste collector to a set of tailored waste and recycling services.

The Langham Hotel staff cites the consultative approach of Westminster’s Commercial Waste Service as a key differentiator from alternative services. Kobus Maree of The Langham Hotel said:

‘Commercial Waste Services were genuinely interested in our whole waste management process to ensure that the services proposed were relevant and going to contribute positively to solving some of the issues we had identified.’

The services that the hotel now receives as a result of the consultation are detailed in the full case study, which can be downloaded at the bottom of the page.
